🔪 Mafia faction

Town of Salem Mafia roles

Mafia wins by keeping enough members alive to control the vote while reducing the reliability of Town information. The faction’s private coordination is powerful, but it also creates shared incentives that can be read from kills, saves and claim timing.

Mafia information advantage

Mafia usually knows its teammates from the start, so the day game is about manufacturing believable uncertainty. Every fake claim should fit the role list, the graveyard and the night sequence.

Kill priority

A good kill removes information or future voting control. Think about who can confirm another player tomorrow, not only who is currently loud.

Distancing and bussing

Teammates do not need to defend each other constantly. Controlled disagreement can make later claims stronger, but unnecessary bussing can destroy the faction’s numbers before the information gain is worth it.

Mafia role guides

How Mafia roles work together

Mafia Killing keeps the night kill moving, Support roles disrupt Town actions, and Deception roles damage the quality of public information. These jobs are strongest when they serve one plan: the target selected for the kill, the role blocked, the player silenced and the cover claims should all shape the same next-day board.

Private teammate knowledge is the faction’s biggest structural advantage. The public challenge is hiding that certainty. Mafia players should avoid identical reads and perfectly synchronized votes that reveal a shared information source.

What Town should look for

Town should study which players repeatedly benefit from Mafia deaths, who had unusually precise knowledge before a flip and which claims require the same hidden assumptions. A single association is weak; a pattern across votes, visits and coordinated cover stories is much stronger.

Disguiser

Mafia Deception

Alter investigative appearances and the identity shown for a Mafia member’s visit.

Disguiser changes the way a Mafia member appears to certain investigative roles. Its reworked ability can make a Lookout see the identity of the person being imitated instead of the Mafia visitor. It also interferes with role-based investigative information, so a visit report is not always a direct identification of the person who performed the action.

Suppose a Mafia member visits 8 while disguised as 4. A Lookout watching 8 can report 4 as a visitor even though the underlying action came from the Mafia member. Town should compare the claimed action, other visits and possible disguises before treating that single identity as an execution order.

Older descriptions say a Disguiser changes the role shown on death. That is not the current reworked ability: Forger handles falsified graveyard information. As Mafia, coordinate a disguise with an ally’s actual task and cover claim. A deceptive result is useful only when the public explanation remains consistent the following day.

Hypnotist

Mafia Deception

Send false night feedback that can make a player misread what happened.

Hypnotist plants a selected night message. The message is evidence of what the target was told, not proof that the corresponding heal, roleblock, poison or other effect actually occurred. This is why a player can accurately quote feedback and still reach the wrong explanation for the night.

Use that distinction when investigating competing claims. A claimed healer and a reported heal can support each other, but in a setup with Hypnotist they do not independently confirm both players. Ask for target histories and look for results that the planted message alone could not create.

For Mafia, select feedback that fits the coordinated story and the actual night. Avoid claiming that a fake message performed a real action. Hypnotist was added to the base-game role pool in patch 3.3.0; it is available where the configured list permits it and should not automatically be dismissed as Coven-only.

Ambusher

Mafia Killing

Wait at a target’s house and attack one visitor, at the risk of being identified.

Ambusher is a Mafia Killing role that attacks a visitor to its chosen target. The selected house and the eventual victim are different pieces of the action. Other visitors can learn the Ambusher’s identity, so attacking a busy house creates both an opportunity for a kill and a serious exposure risk.

Coordinate the ambush with the Mafia’s main kill and with likely Town movement. A publicly important player often attracts protection, but the visitors that survive may be able to identify you the next day. Do not assume an extra kill is worth sacrificing an ally when Mafia can instead preserve a winning vote count.

For Town, record an Ambusher identification exactly and distinguish it from a guess based on who died. A report from a living visitor can be much stronger than speculation about the chosen house. Like Hypnotist, Ambusher entered the base-game pool in patch 3.3.0; its presence depends on the role list.
