Questions about the original game

What is Town of Salem?

The original game is a multiplayer contest of hidden roles, night actions, discussion and public trials. The Coven expansion adds roles and modes; Town of Salem 2 is a separate game with different mechanics.

What should I learn before my first match?

Read the role card and victory condition, then learn the night-to-day cycle. Keep a chronological will and ask for complete claims. You can look up unfamiliar roles during the match instead of memorizing the whole catalog beforehand.

Can I play through this site?

The Play page opens the official browser client after you press Play. Game accounts and access belong to the provider. This fan site does not handle your password or grant paid game access.

What happened to Escort and Consort?

The original game renamed them Tavern Keeper and Bootlegger in patch 3.3.11. Older guides and screenshots can still use the former names. Their roleblock functions should be interpreted using the current client.

Does an innocent Sheriff result confirm Town?

No. Godfather and several Neutral roles can be innocent, and deception can change the interpretation. Sheriff results are constraints on a claim, not a complete alignment reveal.

Does an Investigator identify an exact role?

Normally the result is a group. Use the correct base-game or Coven table, account for framing, dousing, hexing and disguising, then narrow the possibilities with the role list and other evidence.

What does VFR mean?

Vote For Role uses nomination pressure to obtain a claim. Getting the information and voting guilty are separate decisions; a slow or nervous claim is not automatically a mechanical contradiction.

What happens when guilty and innocent votes tie?

The defendant is acquitted. Conviction requires more guilty than innocent voting power; abstentions do not count as either. A revealed Mayor’s vote carries extra weight.

Can a dead role still affect the next night?

Yes. Retributionist and Necromancer can use eligible corpses, while some roles have their own post-death abilities. A corpse using an ability is not the same as a player being permanently resurrected.

Are the similar games all multiplayer?

No. The comparison page labels group games and solo deduction games separately. Choose a group game for live bluffing, or a solo game for statement checking and suspect comparison without organizing a lobby.

Where should I verify a disputed mechanic?

Start with the current game client and the relevant official patch notes. Check that a reference covers the original game, not Town of Salem 2. Some website summaries retain historical wording; where a patch changes an interaction, use the updated rule and keep the match’s mode in view.

Is this the official Town of Salem website?

No. It is an independent fan guide. Town of Salem and the associated artwork and trademarks belong to their owners.

Is Town of Salem free to play?

Access to the original game depends on the account. Premium ownership and Coven access are separate. An eligible referral at account creation grants five trial games; it does not promise unlimited free play. Read the current access shown in the game client.

How many roles are in Town of Salem?

The original game and Coven expansion have 49 roles: 19 Town, 11 Mafia, 13 Neutral and six Coven. Pestilence is a transformed state of Plaguebearer, which is why a reference may show 50 entries. The selected mode determines which roles can appear.

Is Town of Salem 2 the same game?

No. Town of Salem 2 is a separate game with a different role pool and interactions. Use the original game’s Classic or Coven rules here; a matching role name does not make a sequel ability interchangeable.

Do scrolls guarantee a role?

No. Scrolls increase the chance of an eligible role in supported modes. They do not add an illegal role to the list or prove the role another player received. Check equipped scrolls and the selected mode before joining.

Town of Salem updates that affect these rules

Patch 3.3.0 reworked Disguiser, changed Forger and made Ambusher and Hypnotist available in base-game lists that permit them. A guide using the earlier Disguiser death-role mechanic does not describe the reworked role.

Patch 3.3.11, released in October 2024, renamed Escort to Tavern Keeper and Consort to Bootlegger. It also added interface themes and saved-will customization. The old names still appear in historical screenshots, but they are not additional roles.

Patch 3.3.15, published in May 2026, improved parties by showing Coven ownership and allowing a Coven choice when every member has access. It also addressed client stalls and chat behavior. For a particular match, read the current client and configured list before applying a rule from an older season.
