Suspicious, innocent and altered feedback
- A suspicious result is valuable but not universal proof of a specific evil role.
- The Godfather is a notable exception in the official role reference and can appear innocent to the Sheriff.
- Framing and mode-specific mechanics can complicate how a result should be interpreted.
Check the claim that tomorrow can resolve
Early game
Early Sheriff checks are most useful on players whose result will shape the next day. Checking a completely inactive slot may produce a result but no useful follow-up; checking a contested claim creates immediate leverage.
Mid game
Revisit “innocent” results after role information changes. An innocent check does not make the player mechanically confirmed, especially when roles capable of hiding from Sheriff exist.
Endgame
In a small lobby, a suspicious result can force a decisive counterclaim, but verify whether any framing or immunity explanation remains before ending the game on one result.
Report the result without upgrading it to certainty
Post the target and the exact suspicious/innocent result. Do not rewrite “innocent” as “confirmed Town,” because that overstates what the ability proves.
Test a Sheriff’s chronology and exceptions
A Sheriff claimant should have chronological results and a believable target rationale. Test suspicious calls against flips and ask whether the claimant consistently understands the Godfather and framing exceptions.
Important interactions
- Godfather can appear innocent, so Sheriff should not clear a player solely from one check.
- Framer can make an otherwise innocent target look suspicious to investigative roles.
- Transporter can redirect the check, making the reported target different from the player actually examined.
Decision example: a suspicious passive claim
You check a player who claimed a passive Town role and receive suspicious. Instead of saying “confirmed evil,” ask for the full claim, compare the role list and check whether a Framer or Transporter is plausible. The result should drive a focused trial, not bypass the rest of the game.
Common mistakes
- Clearing every innocent result as Town.
- Hiding suspicious results until after the wagon is already decided.
- Ignoring framing or transport when a result conflicts with stronger mechanics.
