Duels and the two-plunder objective
- A target can defend against the Pirate’s chosen attack in the duel.
- A failed plunder produces no loot.
- You win after two successful plunders. Pirate belongs to the Coven expansion role pool; it is not a base Classic role.
Select an opponent for your own objective
Early game
Pick targets whose attention is divided by bigger faction problems. Players under day pressure may overthink the duel, while obvious power roles may attract protection or other night interactions that complicate your plan.
Mid game
Use public claims to choose targets who cannot afford to spend the night focused on your duel. Your independent goal means you can pressure Town, Mafia or Neutral players depending on which choice best advances the plunder count.
Endgame
Once you are close to the win condition, survival becomes more valuable than social influence. Avoid becoming the default compromise elimination when Town and Mafia are temporarily unwilling to vote each other.
Explain duel results without promising allegiance
Pirate is often a claimable independent role when the lobby tolerates neutral objectives, but revealing too early tells everyone exactly how many nights you may need and makes you expendable after a failed duel.
A duel confirms an encounter, not alignment
Other players should verify whether claimed Pirate duel feedback matches known targets. A fake Pirate that invents plunders may struggle to explain why no target acknowledges the interaction.
Important interactions
- Jailor can remove your ability to pursue the scheduled plunder by jailing you.
- Roleblock immunity can allow some duel targets to act. Acknowledged duel feedback verifies the encounter, not the target’s alignment.
- Faction leaders may temporarily keep a Pirate alive if the duels pressure the opposing side, but that alliance ends when your vote becomes dangerous.
Decision example: pirate target choice
If Town and Mafia are locked in a close vote, a Pirate can select the player who is least able to afford distraction while keeping a neutral public stance. The goal is not to solve the faction fight; it is to use the faction fight as cover for the next successful plunder.
Winning the duel is different from winning the match
Your objective counts successful plunders, not promises to help a faction or the number of people who admit being challenged. Keep a simple tally of the duel outcomes shown by the game. A failed duel is not half a win, and a declared Pirate claim does not prove that either required success has occurred.
Once two successful plunders are secured, distinguish your completed personal objective from the unresolved faction contest. Before that point, a duel target that pleases Town may still be a poor choice if it does not improve your own chance of finishing the objective.
Common mistakes
- Choosing targets randomly instead of using public information about incentives.
- Revealing the exact progress toward the win condition when the lobby has no reason to keep you alive.
- Acting like a Town role and forgetting that your own plunder count is the actual objective.
