Define the win condition in one sentence
Before making a vote, state what must happen for your role to win. Survivor needs to live; Executioner needs a specific day elimination; Arsonist needs setup and ignition. This prevents you from drifting into another faction’s priorities.
Use temporary alliances, not permanent loyalty
A neutral can cooperate with Town to remove Mafia today and with Mafia to remove a dangerous Town controller tomorrow. The alliance is rational only while both sides’ objectives overlap. Do not expect a faction to keep you alive once your vote threatens its win.
Control how visible your objective becomes
Some roles benefit from claiming early; others become immediate targets if their progress is known. Pirate progress, Arsonist setup and Plaguebearer infection all create different visibility costs. Share only what improves survival or advances the objective.
Read parity from your own perspective
At four players, a neutral vote may decide which faction wins. Ask whether that winner can still eliminate you afterward. The “friendly” faction today may have every reason to remove you tonight once your vote is no longer needed.
Change strategy when the role transforms
Executioner becoming Jester or Plaguebearer becoming Pestilence is not a small update; the objective and risk profile change. Recalculate the entire board immediately instead of continuing the old plan by habit.
Neutral decision example
Four players remain: two Mafia members, one Town player and you as Survivor. If removing the last Town player ends the game, you win by being alive when that happens. There is no hypothetical later Mafia kill after the victory screen. If another hostile role remains or the identities are uncertain, reassess whether the proposed vote really ends play before treating it as safe.
Common mistakes
- Playing as honorary Town without checking your own objective.
- Revealing progress that gives every faction a reason to remove you.
- Assuming a temporary ally will protect you after parity changes.
- Failing to recalculate after a transformation or objective change.
