Attacks, retaliation and Cautious mode
- An ordinary roleblock does not stop your selected attack: you can kill both your intended target and the roleblocker. The roleblocker’s will becomes unreadable if killed by this retaliation.
- Cautious prevents the retaliation against a roleblocker. Jailing and a Pirate duel still stop the selected attack; they are not ordinary roleblocks.
- The Serial Killer’s win condition is independent, so both Town and Mafia are long-term opponents.
Choose the survivors after your next kill
Early game
Kill targets who generate confirmation, not just players who accuse you. A strong investigative chain makes every future fake claim harder; removing one link early can preserve several possible identities.
Mid game
Manage the relationship with Mafia carefully. Both sides may temporarily benefit from the other’s kills, but Mafia eventually needs you gone. Avoid making your night target predictable from your public vote.
Endgame
Count who wins after your attack. An extra kill can accidentally hand parity to Mafia or leave Town with a decisive confirmed vote. Independent killers must plan the exact survivor set, not merely “reduce numbers.”
Account for visits and roleblock feedback
Choose a public role that explains whether you visit. Remember that roleblock feedback and visit logs can expose a killing role even when your day behavior is disciplined.
Read retaliation alongside ordinary kills
Town should compare kill timing, roleblock deaths and visit evidence. A claimant who survives suspicious interactions or whose target history aligns too neatly with Serial Killer victims deserves mechanical pressure.
Important interactions
- Tavern Keeper/Bootlegger roleblocks can trigger dangerous retaliation unless the cautious mechanic is used.
- Doctor or Bodyguard may interfere with some kill attempts, creating nights where the intended victim survives.
- Mafia kills can overlap with Serial Killer targets, so death count alone does not identify which faction acted.
Decision example: serial killer target choice
Five players remain: two Town, two Mafia and you. Killing a Town member may hand Mafia total control, while killing Mafia can preserve a path where Town still needs your vote. Serial Killer strategy is often about choosing the survivor configuration that keeps your own win condition alive.
Common mistakes
- Killing only the players who suspected you and creating an obvious motive trail.
- Ignoring how your kill changes Mafia/Town parity.
- Building a fake claim incompatible with roleblock or visitor feedback.
