Quick answer: Pestilence is the transformed state reached after Plaguebearer infects every living player; it becomes a devastating independent killing threat in the Neutral Chaos category.

Transformation, rampage and Invincible defense

  • The Town of Salem 1 reference describes Pestilence with Invincible defense and a powerful rampage-style attack.
  • Pestilence can threaten both the chosen target and visitors, making high-traffic houses dangerous.
  • The transformation is publicly announced, but the player’s identity stays hidden. Day votes remain a threat despite the stronger night defense.

Remove the vote that can end your game

Early game

Pestilence has no true “early game” as a separate role; the relevant setup happened while you were Plaguebearer. After transformation, immediately recalculate who can organize the next day against you.

Mid game

Attack where the rampage can hit multiple players, but do not ignore the vote structure. Removing the player who controls the next trial can be more valuable than maximizing raw body count.

Endgame

When only a few players remain, choose the attack that guarantees a winning survivor count. Your defensive strength protects you at night, but it does not make you safe from the day vote.

The announcement does not identify you

The transformation message announces that Pestilence exists; it does not reveal the player behind it. A previously credible cover may still protect your identity. Expect the other factions to reconsider their suspicions and cooperate against the new threat.

Investigate the public evidence you actually have

Town does not receive the Plaguebearer’s private infection list. Revisit available visit reports, inconsistent claims and subsequent rampage deaths, but do not pretend those observations reveal a complete infection map. Several players may fit the same public evidence.

Important interactions

  • Players visiting the same target as Pestilence may be caught in the rampage, so Town should avoid unnecessary clustering.
  • Only independently observed visits are available to Town; the hidden infection history cannot be reconstructed with certainty from the announcement alone.
  • Jail/role control and day voting should be evaluated around the exact current ruleset because Pestilence carries unusual immunities.

Decision example: pestilence target choice

After transformation, three factions remain but Town still has a confirmed Mayor. A rampage that removes two random players may look stronger than targeting the Mayor, yet leaving triple voting power alive can end Pestilence at the next trial. Endgame arithmetic is more important than the largest possible night kill.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Invincible night defense means the day vote no longer matters.
  • Choosing attacks for maximum spectacle instead of removing the vote or control role that can end you tomorrow.
  • Forgetting that the transformation announcement changes every player’s incentive immediately.
