Quick answer: Spend an alert to gain Basic defense and shoot visitors with a Powerful attack for that night. Stronger attacks can still kill you.

Primary jobUse the threat of an alert to deter hostile visits and punish attackers without wiping out Town support roles

Three alerts and dangerous friendly visits

  • You have three alerts; there is no requirement to spend one on the first night.
  • While on alert, visitors can be shot regardless of whether they intended to help or harm you.
  • Veteran is immune to ordinary roleblocks. That immunity does not depend on spending an alert.

Plan the visitors before choosing an alert

Early game

Do not alert automatically on Night 1 just because it is available. Early alerts are high-variance: killers may ignore you while Doctor, Lookout or Tavern Keeper visits create friendly casualties.

Mid game

Use public perception as part of the weapon. If you become an obvious Town information hub, killers are more likely to visit—but so are protectors. Decide whether your claim is bait, deterrence or genuine coordination.

Endgame

An alert in a small lobby can secure survival and punish the final attacker, but conserving an alert too long can also leave you dead with unused power. Track how many hostile visiting roles remain.

Record alert nights and remaining charges

A Veteran claim should state alert nights accurately. If visitors died to an alert, those deaths become strong confirmation but also reveal your remaining resource pressure.

Compare claimed alerts with visitor deaths

Compare the claimed alert nights with visitor deaths and other role logs. A fake Veteran often chooses nights retrospectively to explain why they survived rather than maintaining a consistent limited-use record.

Important interactions

  • Doctor, Bodyguard, Lookout and other visiting Town roles can die to a Veteran alert, so coordination is crucial after a reveal.
  • Tavern Keeper cannot safely assume a Veteran can be controlled like an ordinary visiting role.
  • Killers may deliberately avoid a publicly claimed Veteran and attack the information network around them instead.

Decision example: a friendly Lookout at risk

You have drawn heavy suspicion but also know a Lookout wants to confirm you. Alerting that night could kill the Lookout and solve nothing. Waiting until your claim is settled and killers have a reason to remove you can produce much cleaner value.

Common mistakes

  • Alerting every early night without considering friendly visitors.
  • Openly baiting visits, then blaming Town roles for believing the bait.
  • Forgetting to track remaining alerts in the will.
