The Coven expansion changes the evidence graph
Town of Salem Coven adds roles and interactions that widen the number of explanations for a night result. This does not make deduction random; it makes bookkeeping more important. Record exact feedback, current mode and the role list before applying a remembered Classic rule.
Town of Salem Coven roles and claim safety
More hostile utility roles mean that publishing information can have a different risk profile. A Town role still needs to help the faction, but revealing every detail immediately may expose predictable targets. Share what the current vote needs and preserve information that can be safely verified later.
Investigator result groups
Town of Salem Investigator results can have additional Coven possibilities. Use the Coven result table, then remove roles excluded by the setup or reliable evidence. A dead role does not rule out another copy while a legal slot remains. Treat the result as a search space rather than a final identity.
Night-action chains
When an action fails or lands unexpectedly, list control, roleblock, transport, protection and target immunity as separate hypotheses. Ask which of those hypotheses also explains the visits and claims elsewhere on the board. Dense mechanics are easier to solve when every effect is timestamped.
How to learn Coven efficiently
Study Town of Salem Coven roles by function: information, protection, control, killing and deception. Then learn the exceptions that matter to your role. This scales better than trying to memorize every interaction before your first Coven game.
Track the Necronomicon
The Coven gains the Necronomicon from Night 3. Its holder receives an upgraded ability and detection immunity, so preserve the night number when comparing claims. Consult the Coven role reference for each member’s function and the expansion guide for additional Town and Neutral roles.
Coven All Any
Coven All Any combines an open role list with the expansion pool. Town, Mafia, Coven and independent roles can appear in unusual proportions, and a familiar claim can have several legal explanations. Do not assume Town began with a majority or that one dead role rules out another legal copy.
Start with results that can be cross-checked: a tracked destination, a complete Investigator group, a protection report or a concrete contradiction in someone’s will. Count living votes before choosing a target. Removing one hostile faction can leave another with control of the next day.
VIP mode
VIP gives Town a particular player whose survival matters to the mode’s victory condition. Town’s information advantage about that player changes how protection is coordinated, while Coven looks for patterns that expose the protected target. Ordinary faction-elimination logic is not enough: read the VIP objective before choosing a risky trade.
Protectors should coordinate compatible actions. Sending every visitor to the same house can interact badly with Crusader or hostile visitor attacks. A Town sacrifice may be preferable to exposing the VIP, but a silent claim still needs an explanation that teammates can use.
Lovers mode
Lovers adds linked survival and victory incentives to the normal role cards. The death of a lover can also kill their partner, so one attack or verdict may remove more than one vote. Identify the relationship rules shown by the mode before treating faction alone as the whole objective.
Before voting, count both the defendant and the possible partner loss. A player can have a reason to protect someone outside their ordinary faction, and a correct role accusation can still create a losing endgame. Keep the lover condition separate from assumptions about what that role would want in an ordinary match.
Coven Town Traitor
The Town Traitor variant gives a Town-role player a hostile allegiance while retaining their role ability. A real investigative result or protective action therefore does not establish loyalty. Coven Town Traitor uses that idea with the expansion faction; the Classic variant uses Mafia.
When the match enters a Traitor hunt, pay attention to its countdown and special rules. The 3.3.11 update added a visible timer and removes alerts from non-Traitor Veterans at the start of the hunt. A late-game decision must fit this mode’s win condition, not only the normal night-kill calculation.
